HC Deb 05 February 1951 vol 483 c164W
71. Sir W. Smithers

asked the Minister of Food how much of the 300,000 tons of assorted grains have been received from the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics; and what steps are taken to examine all imported grain to ensure that it is free from ergot and other harmful seeds.

Mr. Webb

The present contract is in fact for 800,000 metric tons of coarse grains. One hundred and eighty-nine thousand tons had been shipped by 25th January and 127,000 tons had reached this country. Samples of all shipments of imported grain are drawn on arrival and examined by experts so as to ensure, among other things, that it is free from harmful matter.
