HC Deb 05 February 1951 vol 483 cc164-5W
74. Mr. P. Wells

asked the Minister of Food if he will ban the importation into this country of horticultural produce, apples and pears, during home peak production periods, except those produced by workers enjoying wages and working conditions no less favourable than are enjoyed by farm workers in this country.

Mr. Webb

As announced recently imports of certain fruits and vegetables will be restricted this year during the main seasons of home production. I am sending my hon. Friend a copy of the Notice. I am afraid that any further restrictions on the lines suggested would be impracticable; and they would in any event be contrary to the Government's policy of liberalising trade as far as possible.
