HC Deb 05 February 1951 vol 483 c174W
Wing Commander Bullus

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will allow remission of Purchase Tax on radio sets purchased by the recognised national society for the use of bedridden people.

Mr. Gaitskell

The exemption introduced in 1945 of wireless sets for the blind was an exceptional measure, and it was made clear that relief could not normally be provided for particular users of chargeable goods. The concession was accepted by the House on that basis, and I regret that I cannot at this stage allow any further departure from an established principle of the tax.
