asked the Minister of Labour what are the present duties and salary of the Labour Counsellor at Cairo; and whether it is intended to continue to fill this post.

The present duties of the Labour Counsellor at Cairo lie within the field of social, industrial and labour affairs and are:

  1. (a) To advise the Heads of the Missions to which he is appointed;
  2. (b) to ensure that His Majesty's Government are kept fully and correctly informed on all important developments;
  3. (c) to disseminate information on British policy, practice and developments.

As has been stated previously to my hon. Friend, this officer is also Labour Adviser to the British Middle East Office, and in this capacity his services are available on request to the Governments of all countries in the area covered by that Office. His salary is £1,475 per annum plus foreign allowances.

This post has proved to be of considerable importance and value to His Majesty's Government, and it is my intention to continue to fill it.
