HC Deb 02 August 1951 vol 491 c217W
2. Mr. Peter Freeman

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many mounted patrols are at present in the Metropolitan Police Force; and, in view of the necessity for recruitment of further officers and of the effective work undertaken by them, especially at busy street crossings, what steps are being taken to augment this service.

Mr. Ede:

The mounted branch of the Metropolitan Police Force is at its full strength of 166, and the Commissioner is satisfied that this number is adequate. He does not regard it as appropriate to employ mounted officers on traffic control work at busy crossings.
