HC Deb 02 August 1951 vol 491 cc245-6W
93. Brigadier Smyth

asked the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations if he has now received the reactions of Australia and New Zealand to the Draft Japanese Peace Treaty with regard to Article 16 of the provisions for ex-prisoners of war; and whether he will tell the House what their reactions are.

Mr. Gordon-Walker

The United Kingdom Government are in close touch with the Governments of Australia and New Zealand on all matters relating to the draft Japanese Peace Treaty, but such exchanges between Commonwealth Governments are confidential and it would not be in accordance with established practice for me to reveal what particular views have been expressed. If the hon. and gallant Member wishes, I should be glad to send him copies of official statements made on 13th July in Australia and New Zealand on the draft. Treaty.
