§ Mr. Jannerasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs why the British Council are proposing to close their 262W centre at Stratford-on-Avon when the Shakespearian season ends; and whether, in view of the many visitors from overseas who have been welcomed and helped there, some arrangement can be made whereby the council can continue its work.
§ Mr. Ernest DaviesThe limitation of the British Council's funds has made it necessary for them to curtail their activities at Stratford-on-Avon and to relinquish their present premises at Mason Croft. They will, however, maintain a small establishment at Hall's Croft, by arrangement with the Shakespeare Birthplace Trustees, and will also co-operate in certain activities of a Shakespeare Institute which the University of Birmingham are establishing at Mason Croft. The Council will thus continue to do all they can to meet the needs of visitors from overseas.
