HC Deb 19 April 1951 vol 486 c192W
96. Sir R. Glyn

asked the Secretary of State for War whether, in view of the present difficulties being experienced by farmers due to the bad weather and the consequent delay to all farming operations, he will, in consultation with other Departments concerned, consider either the postponement or cancellation of orders that have been issued to Z reservists to report for training at various places throughout the United Kingdom during the months of April and May, provided their applications have the support of the agricultural committees concerned.

Mr. M. Stewart

Any farmer who is being called up can appeal, like any other reservist, against his call-up if he considers that he should be exempted. His case will be considered individually and sympathetically. In view of this facility, and of the fact that the farmers called up will normally be filling some of the more important posts in their units, I am unable to agree to a general exemption such as is proposed by the hon. Member.
