HC Deb 11 April 1951 vol 486 c90W
Mr. W. T. Williams

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Civil Aviation whether consideration has been given to the advantages of his Department using the short ton of 2,000 pounds, instead of the long ton of 2,240 pounds, as a unit of measurement for civil aviation statistics and thus following the practice that has already been adopted by the Airways Corporations.

Mr. Beswick

Yes. It has been decided that in future the short ton of 2,000 lb. will be used in all statistics issued by the Ministry of Civil Aviation. The long ton will be used in the monthly statistics relating to the Corporations' activities and to the use of aerodromes that are issued for the period up to 31st March, 1951, but after that date the figures in these and other statistics will be expressed in short tons.
