asked His Majesty's Government whether they will lay on the Table of the House a statement on the occasions on which resolutions supported by a majority of the Security Council were vetoed by Russia.

LORD HENDERSON

The Soviet Representative has vetoed resolutions of the Security Council on the following occasions:

  • 1. 16th February, 1946-Presence of British and French troops in the Levant states.
  • 2. 18th June, 1946-Spain. Findings of a Committee to investigate a Polish charge that the Franco régime was a threat to peace.
  • 3, 4. 26th June, 1946-Spain. United Kingdom Motion to take note of said findings and questions of whether the matters were procedure or substance.
  • 5, 6, 7, 29th August, 1946-Admission of Jordan, Irish Republic and Portugal as members of the United Nations.
  • 8. 20th September, 1946-Greece. See 10.
  • 9. 25th March, 1947-Corfu Channel incident.
  • 10. 29th July, 1947-Greece. Establishment of a mission to investigate the situation.
  • 11, 12, 13. 18th August, 1947-Admission of Jordan, Irish Republic and Portugal as members of the United Nations.
  • 14, 15. 19th August, 1947-Greece. Australian proposal to take steps to relieve tension and United States resolution calling upon the neighbours of Greece to desist from helping guerrillas.

On the 26th June, 1946, two further resolutions in connection with the problem of Spain were not adopted owing to the negative vote of the Soviet and French representatives, although there were eight votes in favour.
