HC Deb 18 May 1950 vol 475 cc169-70W
Mr. G. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department the number of new recruits to the police service in Wales during 1949; and the number who left the service during that year.

Mr. Ede

During 1949 199 men joined police forces in Wales. One hundred and forty-three men left these forces during the same period; of these 44 had not completed two years' service. The total net increase in strength during the first seven months of the year, before the improvement in conditions of service introduced on the recommendation of the Oaksey Committee began to affect recruitment and wastage, was 14, as compared with 42 in the remaining five months. The wastage among men with less than two years' service was 35 in the first seven months of the year, but only nine in the last five months.
