asked the Minister of Health what is the approximate number of beds occupied in hospitals, nursing homes and other institutions by mental and nervous disease cases, as compared with the number of beds occupied for all other forms of illness.

On 31st December, 1949, there were about 390,000 occupied beds in the National Health Service in England and Wales, of which 140,000 were occupied by mental and 47,000 by mentally defective patients; in addition, some 1,400 beds were allocated to neurological and neurosurgical departments.
