§ 94. Mr. Wyattasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he will encourage the formation of a trades 65W union council in the Colony of Singapore on the lines of the trade union council recently formed in the Federation to cover Government and non-Government employees; and whether he will ensure that the trade union ordinance does not operate to limit the right of freedom of association in the Colony.
§ Mr. J. GriffithsThe Singapore Government would welcome the formation of a trade union council. The initiative must, however, rest mainly with the unions and it is for them to decide whether they desire a council similar to that in the Federation of Malaya. When it is clear that the trade unions are ready to form a council, and it is know what form it is to take, consideration will be given to the necessity for any amendment of local legislation on the subject.
