§ 95. Mr. Keelingasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how much money was spent, and how much revenue lost, on account of the recent drought and famine in Nyasaland; and whether any grant in aid will be made by this country.
§ Mr. J. GriffithsThe Governor of Nyasaland estimates that the direct net cost of relief was approximately £300,000. There has been a considerable loss of revenue including the indirect loss resulting from an estimated decrease of £1¼ million in the value of agricultural production in 1949; but, with the exception of a shortfall on export duties and native tax of about £81,000, it is not possible to assess the loss. No grant-in-aid by His Majesty's Government is contemplated.
