§ 72. Mr. Profumoasked the Minister of Transport what were the factors which influenced him to reject the application by the Stratford-on-Avon Borough Council to extend the 30 miles per hour speed limit area on the Alcester Road to cover the stretch between Church Lane and Albany Road.
§ Mr. BarnesThere is only ribbon development on the north side of this stretch of road for about two-thirds of its length. On the south side, apart from a school, there is no development. It is not my policy to impose a speed limit to meet conditions which occur only at limited periods during week-days, and the best way to protect children crossing roads of this character is to provide an adult patrol. There is no suggestion that speed was a contributory factor in the comparatively few accidents which have occurred on this length of road during the past three years.
