HC Deb 19 October 1949 vol 468 c26W
20. Mr. Pickthorn

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what information he has had from, and what representations he has made to, the United Nations Special Committee on the Balkans about Albanian violations of the Greek frontier.

Mr. Bevin

His Majesty's Government have received reports from the United Kingdom delegate to the Special Committee, based on eye-witness accounts of the Committee's observer groups, that during the fighting in the Vitsi area last August Albanian frontier violations delayed the advance of the Greek Army and enabled large numbers of Greek guerrillas to escape into Albania. Details are given in the First Special Report of Observation Group No. 2, which is being placed in the Library of the House. The United Kingdom delegate joined the other delegates in signing the Supplementary Report of the Committee, which, among other strictures upon Albanian conduct, found that "the Government of Albania is primarily responsible for the threat to peace in the Balkans."
