In 1948, 2,596,000 persons left the United Kingdom by sea and air. The number who emigrated direct by sea to countries outside Europe and the Mediterranean area was 168,000. The number who emigrated to orvia the Continent of Europe or by air is not known. The figures given are for the United Kingdom as the movement between Great Britain and Northern Ireland is treated as internal movement.
