HC Deb 14 February 1949 vol 461 cc116-7W
Brigadier Thorp

69, 75 and 76. asked the Minister of Food (1) in view of the public concern as to the conduct of "operation Octopus," whether he will cause a public inquiry to be held presided over by an independent person;

(2) what were the methods of inquiry used in relation to the "operation Octopus," of which he did not approve;

(3) what was the gross cost of "operation Octopus"; what receipts were obtained as a result of it; and the main items in respect of which the expenditure has occurred.

Mr. Strachey

The methods of which I disapproved involved connivance in offences. The gross expenditure was £2,333 and the receipts negligible. The items of expenditure are still being investigated by the Departmental inquiry, the appointment of which I have already announced. I am satisfied that this will be thorough and that a public inquiry is not necessary.
