HC Deb 14 December 1949 vol 470 c271W
90. Sir W. Smithers

asked the Secretary of State for Air what steps he is taking to improve conditions for officers and men serving in the Middle East especially in the Suez Canal area; and if be will make a statement,

Mr. A. Henderson

The great majority in the Suez Canal Zone are living in fully hutted camps or in pre-war barracks and less than one-fifth are in camps with tented sleeping quarters. We are improving existing living conditions and further improvements are being planned. There are already 476 married quarters in this zone and a further 38 will shortly be available. A certain number of flats will also soon be available in the town of Ismailia and it is hoped in other places in the Canal Zone as well. Improvements in accommodation are also being made and planned at other places in the Middle East.
