HC Deb 14 December 1949 vol 470 c263W
Mr. M. MacPherson

asked the Minister of Food to what factors he attributes the slackening in demand for herring in the home market during 1949.

Dr. Summerskill

It is difficult to be precise on this matter, but contributory causes were probably the increased landings of white fish during the summer and the greater variety of other foods available, the unusually warm summer; the more than usual irregularity of the catches; and the poor quality of some of the herring at the opening of both the Scottish and East Anglian seasons.
