HC Deb 14 December 1949 vol 470 c263W
Captain Hewitson

asked the Minister of Food if he is aware that recently, in six days, from 18th to 24th November, 1,095,580 stone of fish were landed in Hull and 463,490 were left unsold, the unsold portion being sent to fishmeal factories; and if he will make arrangements that, in future, any unsold wholesome fish shall be transferred to the consuming public at not less than the fishmeal factory price.

Dr. Summerskill

The answer to the first part of the Question is, Yes. I am afraid it would be impracticable to set up an organisation such as would be needed to ensure that fish surpluses, which may be only local and temporary, and are perishable and unpredictable, should be distributed only to the consuming public on the lines suggested.
