HC Deb 20 September 1948 vol 456 c24W
108. Brigadier Rayner

asked the Minister of Food what interval elapsed between the refusal sand the permission of his Department to allow the export of plums from this country; why his Department was unaware that the plum crop would be heavy and failed to anticipate the export possibility; and why the permission was withheld until it was too late to avoid financial losses.

Mr. Strachey

My Department has not refused to support applications for licences to export home-grown plums this season provided they were cooking varieties and were not sent in containers needed for the home market. We were fully aware of the likelihood of a heavy crop and took steps early in July to facilitate exports.
