Mr. Selwyn Lloydasked the Minister of Food what is the annual consumption of meat per head in the United Kingdom; what proportions are distributed through retail distributors and catering establishments, respectively; what proportion is distributed for manufacturing purposes; how much does the balance amount to; and how, is it used and distributed.
§ Mr. StracheyIn the year ended 30th June, 1948, the average consumption of carcase and canned corned meats per head in the United Kingdom was 68.8 lbs. expressed as net weight of the different sorts of meat distributed. Of this, 77.1 per cent. went to retail butchers for the domestic ration and 10.2 per cent. for catering establishments, including hospitals, schools and canteens, while 9.2 per cent. was for manufacture. The remaining 3.5 per cent. was used by the Armed Forces and for ships' stores.
