HC Deb 09 November 1948 vol 457 c170W
Mr. Sharp

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury which of the main Government Departments are now running courses on the use of English; what is the approximate number of students and the average weekly period of tuition; and whether good results have already been achieved.

Mr. Glenvil Hall

Courses on the use of English are being run this winter in the following Departments:

  • Admiralty.
  • Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.
  • Air Ministry.
  • Colonial Office.
  • Ministry of Education.
  • General Register Office.
  • Home Office.
  • Ministry of Labour and National Service.
  • Ministry of National Insurance.
  • Ministry of Pensions.
  • Post Office.
  • Ministry of Supply.
  • Board of Trade.
  • Ministry of Transport.
  • Treasury.
  • War Office.
  • Ministry of Works.

The approximate total of students is 860; the average weekly period of tuition is one and a half hours. Most of these courses began only this autumn and it is therefore too early to assess results.
