HC Deb 04 November 1948 vol 457 c112W
100. Mr. Erroll

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will make a statement on the resignation of the the director of his Department's Production Efficiency Service.

104. Sir P. Hannon

asked the President of the Board of Trade the circumstances under which Mr. Chappell, Director of Production Efficiency Service in his Department has resigned; what are the nature and scope of the duties of this section of the general division of the Board; and if a fresh appointment is under consideration.

Mr. H. Wilson

As stated in this House by my predecessor on 11th March, 1946, the Production Efficiency Service was established within the Board of Trade as an advisory service to assist industry to increase productive efficiency. The Service operates in response to requests from firms in any productive industry: it gives advice to firms who desire it on subjects such as the lay-out of plant, stores purchase and organisation, production methods, production planning, labour utilisation, packing and despatch. Mr. Chappell resigned his post of Director of the Service because of a difference of opinion about its organisation. A fresh appointment is under consideration.
