HC Deb 04 November 1948 vol 457 c128W
130. Mr. Skinnard

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what is the total number of Africans resident in Nairobi; what proportion of this number is estimated to be permanently settled there, what facilities exist for the education of their children; what plans have been made by the Government of Kenya for the expansion and improvement of these facilities; and when compulsory education for Africans in Nairobi will be introduced.

Mr. Rees-Williams

The results of the recent census, the first held in Kenya, have not reached me yet, but I understand that about 70,000 Africans are resident in Nairobi of whom 55,000 are permanently settled. There are in Nairobi one Government school and eight missionary schools for Africans with 2,300 pupils. Five new Government schools are projected. The Kenya Government is planning to provide within ten years full primary education under qualified teachers for approximately half the children of the Colony, including Nairobi, but has so far not planned compulsory education for Africans.
