HC Deb 04 November 1948 vol 457 c126W
120. Mr. Tolley

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power when a larger allocation of coal to domestic consumers will be possible.

Mr. Gaitskell

Owing to the urgent need to export as much coal as possible, I cannot at present forecast when it may be practicable to increase the supply to domestic consumers of the grades of coal normally used for household purposes. At the same time, certain lower grade coals and manufactured fuels were freed from restriction in July last and where available can be used to supplement the permitted quantity of house coal. Moreover, stocks of gas coke are at present relatively plentiful, and ordinary consumers in most areas can without difficulty obtain limited supplies of gas coke to supplement their supplies of coal.
