HC Deb 02 November 1948 vol 457 cc42-3W
87. Mr. Baker White

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury the number of private motor vehicles, and the value thereof, imported under diplomatic licences since 1st January, 1946, to the latest convenient date.

Mr. Glenvil Hall

Four hundred and eighty-eight private motor vehicles of an estimated value of £271,000 were imported by foreign diplomats during the period 1st January, 1946, to 15th October, 1948.

Mr. Baker White

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury what ranking a foreign diplomatic representative must hold to be granted a licence to import a private motor vehicle.

Mr. Glenvil Hall

Heads of Missions and Counsellors, Secretaries and Attaches to Embassies and Legations of countries with which reciprocal arrangements exist are allowed to import private motor vehicles without any import licence, subject to restrictions as to resale. Other foreign diplomatic representatives require import licences and their applications are dealt with in the normal way.
