§ Mr. Shephardasked the Minister of Food (1) if we will give the comparative figures for the years 1938 and 1947 of the amount spent weekly on essential foods by the average person;
(2) if he will give the comparative figures for the years 1938 and 1947 of the cost to the public of essential foods.
§ Mr. StracheyIt is estimated that household expenditure on basic foodstuffs in 1938 was approximately £760 million, or about 6s. 1¾d. per head of the population. The comparative figures for 1947 were £791 million and 6s. 3d., respectively. These estimates cover bread, flour, carcase meat, offal and canned corned beef, bacon and ham, fresh, frozen and cured fish, butter, margarine, lard and compound lard, sugar, liquid milk, cheese shell eggs, potatoes and tea.
