HC Deb 10 February 1948 vol 447 cc34-5W
Mr. Ellis Smith

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury if he will set out in tabular form the total national income for 1914, 1920, 1929, 1938, 1946, 1947; the amounts for the same years of total wages and salaries; the average amount and totals paid by people on salaries and those receiving wages for the same years; and the amounts paid in Surtax and total Income Tax.

Mr. Jay

Official estimates of the national income and the national wage and salary bills of the United Kingdom in the calendar years 1938 and 1946 are set out in the White Paper on National Income and Expenditure (Cmd. 7099). No such estimates have been made for years earlier than 1938 and the estimates for 1947 are not yet completed. The amounts paid in Income Tax and Surtax in the calendar year 1938 and 1946 are also recorded in Cmd. 7099; the amounts paid in each financial year are, of course, regularly published in the Finance Accounts of the United Kingdom.
