HC Deb 10 February 1948 vol 447 cc36-7W
71. Mr. Dodds-Parker

asked the President of the Board of Trade why import licences are refused for furniture made in the Gold Coast.

Mr. Bottomley

In view of the restrictions imposed on our own furniture industry by the shortage of timber and the operation of the Utility scheme, furniture imports are limited to articles comparable in type, quality and price to home-produced Utility furniture, and to cases where no special currency problem arises. We would be prepared to consider applications to import from the Gold Coast furniture which satisfies these conditions, but no such applications have so far been received.
