HC Deb 09 February 1948 vol 447 c9W
Mr. Platts-Mills

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs under what provision and of which treaty or agreement it is proposed to make available to the United States air forces the R.A.F. bases at Luga on Malta, and Castel Benito in Tripoli.

Mr. McNeil

No such proposal has been made. Castel Benito is now the international airport for Tripolitania and is, therefore, open to aviation generally. While it was in R.A.F. occupation, transit facilities were given to the United States air forces for particular flights. Luqa is an R.A.F. airfield in Malta, and I am informed by my right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for Air, that, with the concurrence of the Governor of Malta, transit facilities for the United States air forces have been accorded there and will continue to be accorded if asked for by the United States authorities. There is no treaty or agreement on this matter.

Mr. Platts-Mills

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what representations have been received from the Senussi to support the reinstitution of the Mellaha airport by the United States air forces in Europe.

Mr. McNeil

None.
