HC Deb 09 February 1948 vol 447 cc10-1W
60. Mr. Collins

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether in view of the importance of growing the maximum quantity of food this year, he will encourage the ploughing up of more grassland and of cropping this land, when possible, for the 1948 harvest; and whether he will instruct county agricultural executive committees to fix targets in each county for this purpose.

Mr. T. Williams

Every possible encouragement has been and is being given to the ploughing up of suitable grassland and to maximum crop production for the 1948 harvest. The grant for ploughing up grassland has been doubled and other measures to this end include the increased acreage payments and crop prices announced last August, the setting of high national and county targets for priority crops, and an intensive campaign by county agricultural executive committees and the headquarters and county branches of the farmers' and farm workers' organisations to secure the attainment of these targets.
