HC Deb 04 February 1948 vol 446 c297W
Mr. D. J. Williams

asked the President of the Board of Trade why he has decided to abandon the projected clothing factory at Pontardawe, Glamorganshire, which was approved two years ago; if he is aware that not a single factory has been located in this area under the Distribution of Industry Act, 1945, and that this is causing serious concern to the people of the district; and if he will reconsider his decision.

Mr. H. Wilson

The project to which my hon. Friend refers and which was approved two years ago, was subsequently abandoned by the applicants. At a much later date a substantially modified scheme was put forward, but I fear that it has been necessary to defer this on account of the cuts arising from the review of the Capital Investment programme. While I am aware that no factory has been allocated in Pontardawe itself under the Distribution of Industry Act I would remind my hon. Friend of the opportunities for employment which have been or are being provided within a few miles of this place.
