HC Deb 02 February 1948 vol 446 c240W
Sir W. Smithers

asked the Minister of Food what quantity of biscuits and Christmas puddings, respectively, exported from Britain in 1947 were returned by the U.S.A.; what use has been made of them since their return and why they cannot be released for home consumption; and what was the amount of the loss incurred.

Mr. Strachey

Approximately 25 tons of biscuits and five tons of puddings were returned to this country from the U.S.A. Some of the puddings have been reprocessed and the rest which had gone mouldy have been used for animal feeding; the biscuits are being sold for consumption in canteens and other establishments. The financial loss incurred is borne by the manufacturers.
