HC Deb 17 December 1948 vol 459 c222W
43. Mr. Bossom

asked the Lord President of the Council, if he is satisfied that the experiments which have been made to eliminate harmful results from the burning of coal and/or fuel oil in generating stations adjacent to other buildings have been successful; and will he lay before the House the report dealing with this matter.

Mr. H. Morrison

The present methods of removing sulphur from flue gases of power stations, although effective, are costly and troublesome. The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research is trying to find methods of removal which, while equally effective, would be less costly and troublesome. As I told the hon. Member for Stone (Mr. H. Fraser) on 29th April this year, the problem is not an easy one, and a quick remedy cannot be expected. This work has not yet reached a stage where a report could usefully be made.
