HC Deb 28 October 1947 vol 443 cc45-6W
72. Mr. Blackburn

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer, whether, in view of the vital contribution which scientists, particularly those with University education, can make towards national economic recovery, he will give an assurance that despite the present economic crisis there will be no reduction in the financial assistance and priorities which are being given to the expansion of the capacity of the universities of this country to provide us with more scientific manpower as rapidly as possible.

Mr. Dalton

I have no intention of changing the scale of recurrent grants which I announced on 10th March last. As regards capital grants, my right hon. Friend the Minister of Works and I are fully alive to the considerations to which my hon. Friend draws attention, and hope that it will be possible to carry out the programme to which I referred in March.
