HC Deb 28 October 1947 vol 443 c49W
80. Air-Commodore Harvey

asked the President of the Board of Trade what are the existing stocks of raw silk in this country; how much he expects to import from Japan and other countries during 1948; and at what price.

Mr. Belcher

Stocks are about 480,000 lb. The volume of imports we can afford in 1948 must depend largely on the success of British silk manufacturers in finding export markets for their products. So long as the industry maintains the necessary proportion of exports we will do our best to keep it supplied with the silk it needs. I cannot at present say what the price will be.
