HC Deb 28 October 1947 vol 443 cc48-9W
Mr. C. Smith

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury in which Government Departments agency typists and short-hand typists are at present employed; from how many agencies they come; to what hours they are conditioned; what is the scale of payment to the agencies and how many typists and shorthand typists, respectively, are employed in this way.

Mr. Glenvil Hall

Owing to the great difficulty experienced in recruiting sufficient directly-employed staffs to handle urgent work, agency typists or shorthand typists are at present employed in the following departments: Air Ministry. Ministry of Civil Aviation, Colonial Office, House of Lords, Ministry of Fuel and Power, Ministry of Town and Country Planning, Board of Trade, Treasury Solicitor's Office, War Damage Commission. The staff comes from six agencies; the hours worked are 32–37½ a week; the payments made in respect of each operator range from £5 10s. 0d. to £7 7s. 0d. a week. Forty-six shorthand typists and 45 typists are at present serving on an agency basis in Government Departments.
