HC Deb 27 November 1947 vol 444 c308W
86. Mr. Astor

asked the Minister of Education whether he will give some priority to building village halls, social centres, and social clubs in village communities, where schemes of this kind are submitted to and approved by local authorities, in view of the need to increase the numbers of our agricultural workers, and concurrently to give further amenities to village communities.

Mr. Tomlinson

I regret that, in order to avoid conflicting demands on labour and materials, all major proposals for village halls, youth clubs, community centres and the like, must be deferred for the time being. But projects making limited demands on labour and materials, including the temporary village halls provided by means of advances from the Development Fund to the National Council of Social Service, will be sympathetically considered in the light of the local building situation.
