HC Deb 26 November 1947 vol 444 c283W
62. Dr. Stross

asked the Minister of Food what quantity of herrings have been supplied for consumption in Britain in the current year; and what quantity of oil has been obtained from herrings for the manufacture of margarine.

Mr. Strachey

Up to 15th November, about 173,000 tons of herrings have been supplied to the home market, either fresh or processed. Up to 30th September about 500 tons of oil had been extracted from herrings in this country, but the scheme is still in the experimental stage and the quality of the oil, although improving, is not as yet generally good enough for making margarine. It has been used to replace imported oil for other purposes.
