HC Deb 24 November 1947 vol 444 cc241-2W
70. Mr. Marlowe

asked the Minister of Food why he has decided that five pints of milk a week is now sufficient in diabetic cases, whereas seven pints a week was previously considered necessary by his medical advisers for such cases.

Dr. Summerskill

The medical advisers to this Ministry considered that no diabetic would suffer from a temporary reduction of two pints in his weekly allowance of milk.

74. Mr. G. Williams

asked the Minister of Food what steps the Government have taken to meet the problem of a shortage of milk for children over five years who have not yet gone to school.

Dr. Summerskill

A child unable to attend school because of physical or mental disability receives one pint of milk per day. I regret that it is not practicable to provide for the small number of children who are unable to attend school for other reasons, but these children in common with all others between five and 18 years of age receive half a pint of milk per day. The shortage of milk has not affected these allowances.

86. Mr. Dumpleton

asked the Minister of Food whether there is any prospect of being able to add old people to the priority classes for milk supplies.

Dr. Summerskill

My right hon. Friend regrets that in view of the present shortage of supplies he does not see his way to add old people to the priority classes for milk.
