§ 77. Mr. S. Marshallasked the Postmaster General what steps are being taken to improve the telephone service on the Vigilant exchange, where steady deterioration has taken place during the last 12 months; and when it is contemplated this exchange will be converted to the automatic system.
§ Mr. Wilfred PalingRegular samples of the service at Vigilant exchange show that apart from September last when there was a shortage of staff, there has been no general deterioration over the past 12 months. There should be a steady improvement as the newer members of the staff gain experience. Work has started on the building for the new exchange and the automatic equipment has been ordered, but I regret that it is not possible at present to say when the change-over is likely to take place.
