HC Deb 19 November 1947 vol 444 c180W
77. Mr. S. Marshall

asked the Postmaster General what steps are being taken to improve the telephone service on the Vigilant exchange, where steady deterioration has taken place during the last 12 months; and when it is contemplated this exchange will be converted to the automatic system.

Mr. Wilfred Paling

Regular samples of the service at Vigilant exchange show that apart from September last when there was a shortage of staff, there has been no general deterioration over the past 12 months. There should be a steady improvement as the newer members of the staff gain experience. Work has started on the building for the new exchange and the automatic equipment has been ordered, but I regret that it is not possible at present to say when the change-over is likely to take place.
