HC Deb 19 November 1947 vol 444 c186W
Sir W. Smithers

asked the Minister of Food, in view of the reduction in the sugar ration, how many tons of sugar have been exported from this country during the last six weeks; how many tons were shipped in the s.s. "Albatross," m.v. "Dynamo" and m.v. "Heron," and what was the destination of these ships; how many tons are lying in the London docks, St. Katharine's dock, West India docks, Victoria, Royal Albert and King George V docks, awaiting export; and how much of this is stored in warehouses and how much in the open.

Mr. Strachey

During the six weeks ending 8th November, 1947, approximately 30,000 tons refined sugar were exported from the United Kingdom. None of this sugar was drawn from supplies imported for United Kingdom domestic consumption. No raw sugar was exported. About 3,500 tons were shipped on the steamers "Albatross" and "Heron," but nothing on the m.v. "Dynamo." The destinations were Persian Gulf and Italy. No stocks of refined sugar are held in the docks or warehouses mentioned, as refined sugar for export is supplied direct from the refineries. No refined sugar is ever stored on open sites.
