HC Deb 19 November 1947 vol 444 cc185-6W
75. Mr. Challen

asked the Minister of Food what steps he is taking in connection with the self-suppliers pig scheme to ensure that pigs kept by cottagers and other private individuals under this scheme are always slaughtered by humane methods; and whether he proposes to take any additional steps to prevent unnecessary cruelty.

Mr. Strachey

A good proportion of self-suppliers' pigs are slaughtered at Ministry of Food slaughterhouses or bacon factories where humane slaughter is the rule. Self-suppliers who kill their pigs elsewhere, are, of course, subject to the Common Law as to cruelty to animals.
