HC Deb 17 November 1947 vol 444 c144W
Sir W. Smithers

asked the Minister of Food why his Department declined to send a speaker to address the Orpington branch of the British Housewives' League.

Mr. Strachey

The meeting to which the hon. Member refers was not one to which it would be proper to send an official, in view of the recognised principle that civil servants should not take part in political controversy.
