HC Deb 17 November 1947 vol 444 cc136-7W
88. Mr. Wilkes

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he has as yet any statement to make on the document relating to specific cases of the execution and beheading of women in Greece for political offences which was submitted to his Department by the hon. Member for Central Newcastle-upon-Tyne in July, 1947.

Mr. Mayhew

Yes. As far as can be ascertained, nine of the twelve women mentioned in the list were in fact executed by firing squad, not beheaded. The fate of the other three is unknown and it is possible they may have been pardoned. The charges against these women included high treason, membership of armed bands, and the rendering of active assistance to bandits.
