asked the Minister of Food what quantities of wheat will be required to implement the bread ration during the next twelve months; what further quantities would be required to make it possible to abolish bread rationing; and what quantities are already promised from which countries by contract or by trade treaty.

To satisfy the full entitlement under the bread rationing scheme at present, it is estimated that the equivalent of about 4,850,000 tons of wheat per annum would be needed. It is impossible to estimate reliably what the additional consumption might be if bread rationing was abolished, as this would depend on the general food supply position at the time. For this reason and because imports under contract represent only part of our wheat imports, it would not be in the public interest to give the information asked for in the last part of the Question,
