HC Deb 13 November 1947 vol 444 cc111-2W
Mr. Osborne

asked the Minister of Transport if he is aware that on the weekend of 1st November, 700 pedigree Lincoln sheep, part of a livestock consignment of £80,000 for Russia, were kept waiting two days in unsatisfactory, temporary accommodation because the sheep pens at Tilbury Docks were filled with Ford motor spare parts; that a certain number of sheep were rejected as a consequence; and if he will see that adequate arrangements are made for the shipment of perishable goods and so encourage all breeders to assist in the export drive.

Mr. Callaghan

I understand that the purchasing agents were satisfied with the arrangements made and that the rejection of a few sheep because of poor condition was not the result of an unsatisfactory lairage. The facilities at the ports for shipment of perishable goods are generally adequate.
