HC Deb 13 November 1947 vol 444 cc115-6W
Major Vernon

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many medical stations are functioning in the Protectorate, and how this compares with the number in 1945; and what steps are being taken by the Government of Sierra Leone to fill the urgent need for doctors.

Mr. Rees-Williams

Excluding mission establishments, the Protectorate had eight hospitals and 17 dispensaries in 1945. During 1946, owing to shortage of staff, three hospitals were placed temporarily on the footing of dispensaries and four dispensaries were closed. According to the information available in the Colonial Office, two hospitals are still closed. A general revision of salaries in Sierra Leone has since come into effect and the recruitment of medical officers is improving. Five have been recruited during 1947, leaving four vacancies.
